]]> Wed Sep 24 2008 Heritage Day on the Met http://jonpotterphotos.fotopic.net/c1578606.html In conjunction with the Heritage Days all accross the country, LUL ran the 1938 Art Deco Northern Line train and newly re-liveried Metropolitan Vickers Bo-Bo No. 12 'Sarah Siddons' (with the 4TC and Class 20 No. 20189) on trains between Harrow-on-the-Hill, Watford and Amersham. A few pictures of these trains, some of the first public uses of Sarah Siddons since Steam on the Met finished in 2000, are seen below. Although the weather was awful we had a very nice all you can eat cream tea for a fiver in the first class observation saloon which was very enjoyable! The event saw visiting SDJR 2-8-0 No. 88 join newly restored No. 7812 and Nos. 4566, 5164 and 45110. Shots from the morning and evening with the usual gear plus a polarising filter on some of them, used as an experiment really. No shots afternoon time. Also took a few different shots on the way home, check ou the portfolio (via the links box) for these. Only took the 18-55mm lens, could have done with the other one really. The drab weather also failed to help, so I tried a few different compositions. Also 4 shots, again using the 18-55mm lens, in the evening - just 10 minutes really - of whatever I could find. Supporting locomotives were 80151, 32473, 672, 9017 and 65. Although I had plenty of long range 'train in landscape' and a couple of sunset shots planned, I could not try any of these due to the weather. 13 pictures are here simply due to the fact that there has not been an update for a while. A fantastic event with 34007 from 34007 Ltd and Mid Hants, 34081 from NNR and BoBLS, 34028 from SSL, plus 34023 (21C123) and 32473 from the home fleet. This was the first time I've been to a gala on a non-weekend day only, and I thoroughly enjoyed it - well done to the Bluebell! Other locos were 41312, 35005, 34007, 34016 and 73096, running on freight, passenger and breakdown trains. As always at the Mid Hants the weather was none too great, but the rain held off for the most part which was the main thing. The best part? A double headed run up the bank behind 73096 and 35005 - the sound was magical. Well done to the MHR for a great day. The weather was indifferent on most days, but thoroughly poor on the cliffs at Friog on the Friday - shots only included as they show the loco dressed up for the last day. It was something of a charter day in York, with two 47's (both pictured) and 67029 in use. The two WCRC standby 47's and class 37 No. 37038 were at the station as well, bringing back memories from the 60's when steam and diesel worked together through the station. The remaining days were spent on the NYMR, our first visit since they became a Main Line TOC. Locos in use included 75029, 49395, 45212, 80135, 60007, D7628 and No. 61264 was on steam test on the last day. The rain held off while we were on the Island, but started again when we returned to the mainland, but nonetheless it gave us a chance to enjoy the charming IoWSR. Also in steam was Austerity 0-6-0ST 'Waggoner'. Unfortunately W8 was running with the push-pull set plus two other coaches. The fourth shot is from the 29th, when the loco was running with 3 Mk. 1's in tow. I was lucky enough to be handed the shovel for a bit of the 3rd and the 4th runs of the day. It is worth noting that the loco blows off at 165psi and is virtually useless below 130, so there's not much room for error. Allot more work involved than my previous go with 9682! The train, which ran Harrow - Amersham - Watford - Harrow, featured No. 12 running with 20227, a Steam on the Met favourite. Although this tour was for invited guests I am reliably informed that this was run by Metronet as a trial prior to a series of shuttles later in the year. Lets hope so. It was also the maiden use of the water carrier on a public tour. Seen near Beaconsfield station working hard - with what appeared to be two footplate members working the fire. The first two locations we sussed were not possible (due to too many people and grown up vegitation), so this really was a last resort, indeed we ran to get there. The event was the culmination on a month-long visit of Sharp Stewart B No. 19 to the LBR, following reprofiling work that prohibited an earlier visit. Locos were: 'Doll', 'Chaloner', 'P C Allen' and No. 19. 'Rishra' and No. 740 were in light steam and moving around Pages Park shed, and No. 778 was static. 21st October. 53809 rolls into Pickering. 23 October. 75029 climbs past Esk Valley cottages, steadily... ...but comes to grief and the drain cocks are opened... ...but it doesn't quite stop and keeps climbing. 17th August. Taliesin was at harbour on the 17th - between working the morning and evening Not much doubt where we are - it says Porthmadog and the weatehr's awful.... The square (Earl of Merioneth) came to our rescue, however, and pushed us to Tanybwlch Blanche, now uncoupled from the train, awaits shunting... ... onto the back of the train that DLG has bough down from Bleanau This meant the rare sight of two locos at the top of TanyBwlchs platforms A contrast in front ends between the Square (Earl of Merioneth) and Ricket (Blanche) The Earl makes a spectacular departure, with only minimal wheelslip of the bottom engine Earl of Merioneth/Iarll Merionedd departs Tanybwlch in fine style Torrential rain. Well, it is Wales! The quare on No. 6 road, waiting to take out the train that Merrdin will bring in Having bought in the train (while I was having a ncie warm drink in Spooners!), Merrdinn runs back towards Boston Lodge Merddin heads towards the cob and then Boston Lodge - having worked only a single round trip David Lloydd George - viewed between coaches 16 and 20 - corsses the cob, about a mile away from the camera. About 5 minutes later, it rolls into Harbour station 19th August. I couldn't resist this shot of steam and murky conditions - its 138 on the WHR (C), shot from coach 23 The only shot I took on the WHR (C) - it was far too dull really for taking pictures. 138 is dmired by the crowds, including Murray Tremellen Back at Porthmadog, Gelert had just arrived with the WHR(P)'s 1630 train On the 20th, we went to Corris. The A4 hadn't been lit by this point for its tests, and the Super D was suffering with a broken spring. 75029 is next to the A4 D5061 hauling my train The newly renamed Car No. 324, renamed in memory of Jos De Crau, owner of many coaches, 80135 and D7628 until a year ago. LHJC No. 29, about to go to the Kent and East Sussex 53809 (didn't fit loading gauge), 34028 (four slipped tyres) and 50027 outside the deviation shed 5224 hammering into Goathland, with a funny methof of attaching the lamp! 5224 whistling for Goathland station 5224 rolling up the bank And passing a 5mph sign. I've had troubles with that one before!

Mad Bess, built at the RLR in 1998, is cleaned outside the carriage shed. The loco is the only steamer on the line, and runs most Sundays and Bank Holidays in the Summer Mad Bess oustide the carriage shed. The loco only did 2 round trips during the evening, and a few cab rides Mad Bess, Bayhurst and Lady of the Lakes outside the carriage shed Lady of the Lakes leaving Woody Bay with a train for Waters Edge I found a good location for video - but it was a little too dark for normal pictures. With my one of my favourite locos (5051) at the gala I couldn't really be annoyed, however, even if it's running with the 'wrong' name! 'Eddystone' on the 9th April. I'd just come off the Moorlander, and posh (for me anyway!) clothes and a muddy footpath didn't mix well..... No. 6619 after arriving at Pickering. The eagle-eyed will notcie the chime whistle inplace of the larger GWR one. Standard 4 No. 80135 at Pickering on the 13th April. This spot can only be used when 6 coaches or less are being used. The loco had arrived at Levisham right time, but adding an extra coach had held up 75029 so we were 20 down arriving at Pickering. Then we had to add another coach, and were 45 late leaving! 'Eddystone' in the shed at Grosmont on the 13th. It had been pulled out of the shed for about a week previously to this shot, No. 5224 thunders passed Darnholme withthe 1045 ex Grosmont. Ironically the 2-8-0T was loaded to 6 coaches, whereas 6619 and 80135 were loaded to 7! 14/4/06 No. 5224 covered 7374 miles in 2005 on the NYMR - and it makes a amazing sight climbing towards Goathland on the 14th April No. 80135 on the 1145ex Grosmont. Acheiving 10179 miles in 2005, the loco was only beaten by the S15 - No. 825 - with 10264. Original haulage, Battle of Britain 'Tangmere', a frequent appearer on this site, was booked to work the train throughout, but gauging issues meant that this was changed, at Network Rails expense, to Ian Rileys Black 5, No. 45047 'The Lancashire Fusilier', on part of the trip. The loco worked the train from London Victoria to Sittonbourne, via the Isle of Grain branch, in the company of Diesel No. 66127 (for reversal along the branch). The loco then changed at Sittingbourne and we were left with mile after mile of 75mph running (I recorded more than 72 on a couple of occasions) with Tangmere. We were only allowed out of the train for 10 mins of the 8 hour journey, which was the only drawback. At the breif brak point, Faverhsam West, tresspassing on the main line was a common sight. Some horrific photos of this are seen on the gallery. My timing sheet and video files of the day will shortly become available on another site. Here's what we did: 1. Replace clappers 1 - 5, 7 & 8 2. Grease up clapper centering bolts on all bells 3. Grease up stay bolts, 6 - 8 (I didn't have enough time to finish these) 4. Re-rope the 7 5. Squirt "WayOyl" into all the headstocks 6. Paint the clappers on 5 & 7 and use up a little extra paint 7. Tidy up the floor 8. Grease up all the slider bolts 9. General checking 10. As birds came and joined us during this, firm up the wiring - which in turn will be shuttered up 11. Ring all the bells up, then the 7 down again to move the rope, and up again We were both kept busy throughout the 2 days, which were both needed. The 6th at Great Missenden. Cross bars on the frame mean that photography is hard on certain bells. This bell: 13-2-22, cast 1824 The 5th at Great Missenden. 12cwt, cast 1640 by Ellis Knight. It is a very tall bell (like the 7) and it can be seen how much it's tucked up into the headstock, and the large collar. The 3 - obscured by the wheel of the 5th. This bell is 6cwt, cast 1692 The second. 7cwt, cast 1990 The treble - our The tenor - weighing in at 24cwt, cast 1840 The lack of weather protection A clean bit of frame - this is as far as I got while cleaning around this bit as my dad was assaulting the 7th at this point The cause of many troubles - the 21cwt 7, cast by Ellis Knight in 1623 A general view of the bells. A great day out - weather was rubbish here when I left, amazing at Victoria, and then got dull again. I was lucky to catch it today at Victoria, as when I got there they were turning away some photographers - I simply walked in by my ticket, and was taken up to the end of the Pullmans where I was left! John Bunch - Tangmere's part owner - was in presence. I did fail to catch it at Clapham Junction as my train arrived 2 mins before Tangmere and I changed to the wrong platform! There is a picture of allot of steam from a Desiro! Virginia Water's a nice station, and I had fun talking the pics there, but it was a bit overcast (well, allot actually). I'll revisit there in the summer I think, for some more pictures. So I went off to Vauxhall, for the pricely sum of £1, but many of the spots were taken by the time my (late running) train got there. I had a nice spot though - well, nice until an 8-car 450 (Desiro) got in the way..... These are the results - enjoy! 45407 sits outside the Deviation shed on the day before its first trips on the trains. The loco had come in from Leeds on the day of this picture, having worked a 'Dalesman' train over the S&C the previous day 45407 shunts the stock at Whitby. Here, driven by Crewe veteran Bill Andrew (who famously drive the Talisman on its northbound leg on 23/7/05) it shunts in Whitby yard. Steam was provided by 57xx No. 7715 in the up yard, and 'Sydenham', and Peckett's Nos. 2087 'Gibraltar' and 2105 'Rokeby' in the down yard. 3 Vintage 6-wheelers were great to ride in, and with shed tours as well it was a great event for a 1/2 day trip. This is a small collection of photos, although I may expand it, this its limit for a while as I don't have the time to upload loads! Steam was provided by 57xx No. 7715 in the up yard, and 'Sydenham', and Peckett's Nos. 2087 'Gibraltar' and 2105 'Rokeby' in the down yard. 3 Vintage 6-wheelers were great to ride in, and with shed tours as well it was a great event for a 1/2 day trip. No. 7715 awaits departure in the up yard, with the relocated Rewley Road station looking on. The 03 shunter moves out on to the up line to give the 57xx a rest Progress on the Beattie. Both well tanks are now ready to go in, and the driving wheels are also in. The front well tank of the Beattie, No. 30585. Swanscome - the only 'down yard' in ticket steam engine not in use. Metropolitan No. 1 was out of use in the up yard, though Sydenham in the sun! Sydenham waits its turn with the water tank. No. 7715 takes a rest in the up yard. No. 2105 'Rokeby' hauling the vintage 6-wheelers. No. 7715 in the afternoon sun. The last departure in the up yard (this run) ran in great sunlight. The event featured ash, goods, local and full line trains, turning on the turntable, loco shed visitis, book signings (including by Railway Children star Jenny Auggetter) and much more to produce a great gala. Nght time running also featured, and these trains were well loaded!
